Architects of Air

My kid and I made it out to the Architects of Air exhibit in Austin. The first picture, taken from the outside, show what the "tents" are built like. The silver areas are densely coated and minimal light shines through them. The colored areas are translucent and light streams through them, creating geometric panels as seen from the inside. You can read more about this traveling exhibit at their website.Pictures from inside the luminaries. This first room, "The Airlock" was the simplest of all.

Bastrop - A Smoky Dawn: Aerial photography

Yesterday I flew over Bastrop with my family to capture images of the smoke and burnout from the wild fire. We flew early, before air traffic was closed for fire fighting, and the smoke settled over the woods looked surreal. The Bastrop school district is reopening today after being closed since the fire broke out over the Labor Day weekend.

We flew mostly over the area of Bastrop State Park, where thick wooded patches live side by side with burnt out areas charred by the fire. It was a humbling sight to see.

It was a beautiful foggy morning when I set out for this gorgeous family's shoot. As we walked around taking pictures, one little boy kept rejecting the toys that were meant to entertain him. I thought for a minute about the biggest bribe I give my own son when we are outside, and then it hit me - I just had to offer up my car key for play. Needless to say, we had a very happy kid for the rest for this shoot, and my key is none the worse for the wear!

I never imagined I would be doing wedding photography in California, but when my friend Myla wrote to say she was getting married in the Golden Gate Park and asked if I would be her wedding photographer, it took me only the time to check my calendar to know that I would say yes.

Matt and Myla are a super fun couple and we started the day with bridal portraits around the city, after which the ceremony took place at the Fuschia gardens of the GG Park. The evening wrapped up with dinner at a restaurant right next door. Thank you for sharing your special day with me, M&M, and I wish you a lifetime of happiness!

RED: A lovely camera bag!

I don't often blog about accessories or equipment, but a new camera bag hit the market, and it is awesome!

Check out the red Lola bag from Epiphanie. It looks like a gorgeous red purse and can hold your equipment without ever giving you the industrial nylon look. Hurrah! Epiphanie bags are designed by a professional photographer who wanted to carry her equipment from shoot to soccer field to night-out, without looking like she was toting cargo. And did she deliver!

While I haven't bought my Lola bag yet, Beyond Snapshots is hosting a contest with a giveaway. The prize is, you guessed it, a Lola bag! Beyond Snapshots is a website dedicated to getting aspiring photographers off the Auto mode, and into taking beautiful pictures every time they click the shutter.

Rachel, on a freezing Saturday

Props to Rachel for powering through this shoot despite 45 degree weather. I was in a thick layer of fleece and only my fingertips felt the cold. You can barely tell she is cold and we took tons of breaks to warm up under heavy jackets in the sun.

And lastly, Rachel was my muse for retouching work I've been doing. Her flawless skin made my job so much easier!

Jen was interested in a vintage themed pinup shoot and when I asked her if she had a vintage bike or roller-skates, she brought this cool little prop along! We settled on pin-curls for her straight blond hair, and she demonstrated her perfect pinup pout for me :)

Andi's shoot was vintage-pinup themed. At the end of her shoot, we did a mini session with my next model Jen. I'll be posting Jen's shoot in a few days. This was a lot of fun and I got to make use of my new red umbrella!

The next picture isn't processed with a vintage look to it because of the decidedly modern stuff in the background.

But we are back to vintage here!

I got together with these 3 gorgeous models to do two different themed shoots. The first part was outdoors. This is a sneak peak of the outdoors couples shoot. We did a small "reading room" shoot before that and finished our session with an indoor shoot. I'll post those pieces separately since they have very different themes.

Aga came down from San Antonio, armed with her fall and winter coats (as wintery as Texas gets!) for a great photo shoot in downtown. I had a great time demonstrating poses and contorting myself into odd shapes, and then watching Aga take it from there with ease. This shoot was a lot of fun!

Dani and I got together for another shoot, this time with a vintage theme. Many of the items including the turquoise dress, her hat and jewelry were family heirlooms from the 30's. Since I couldn't limit myself to a few images, I made two big storyboards for this shoot.

Mikey - Blue Dog Rescue

I started working with one more local rescue as a volunteer photographer.

Mikey is being fostered by Blue Dog rescue and is one leggy dog! He is a lab mix, 10 months old, with a very gentle personality.

Roxy: HOTLab for adoption

Roxy is currently being fostered by Heart of Texas Lab Rescue. She is a sweet, loving dog and followed her foster dad around as he helped me get her photo-shoot done. She is being treated for heartworm and will be up for adoption as soon as the treatment is done.

Roxy's foster dad also has another lab called Toby, a yellow lab he adopted a few years ago. Toby is always ready for a car ride and came along for the shoot. I couldn't resist getting a portrait of him as well.

Raven: Adopted!

Beautiful Raven came by this weekend for a photo shoot. She is available for adoption through Heart of Texas Lab Rescue. She was so mellow and we took her photos off-leash in the front yard - something I can only dream of doing with my labs!

Edit (6/27/09): I edited the subject to indicate Raven is no longer available for adoption. she got snapped up the week after her glamor shoot. Yippee!
